Saturn Traits
In this system, where Lunar is seen as the child, Venus the Earth mother, Mercury the exuberant grandchild, Mars the warrior and Jupiter the indulgent grandparent, we see Saturn as personifying the father. The associations that we find connected to Saturn in the realms of mythology, legends and linguistics are intricately linked: the concept of Father Time, time being absolute and immutable; the concept of limitation and restriction, of Saturn monitoring and recording human activities, setting boundaries and regulations, and ultimately showing up as Death himself, wielding his scythe and personifying the final inescapable barrier.
Saturn people simply feel tall, and not just physically: they have an overview of other people’s affairs and effortlessly exude a natural sense of authority, so that other types instinctively look up to them. They have a strong affinity with the concept of justice and may work tirelessly for causes connected to fairness. In fact, they have a strong antipathy towards injustice of any kind and are often drawn to large organisations which actively promote fair play. The English High Court judge, grey and bony, his long countenance peering out sternly from under his wig as he dispenses justice having long considered the verdict and sentence, embodies Saturnine sternness. We are reminded of the god Saturn himself, standing erect with his scythe in one hand, a bunch of wheat stalks in the other reminding us, as he has for millennia, of the message ‘You reap what you sow.’
Saturns seem to feel that the world would be a better place if only everyone else were a little bit more like them; they can’t help themselves giving off an air of being slightly disappointed with the rest of us, as if we are not quite as mature or principled as they are. They have high standards of morality and behaviour and make great efforts to live up to the standards that they set for themselves. There is a lack of hypocrisy around this, as a Saturn will not expect another person to live up to standards that they themselves do not uphold in their personal lives. You can be pretty sure that if a Saturn has recommended a diet or exercise regime for your well-being, they have followed the same regime themselves diligently.
Saturns have an inbuilt tendency to be ascetic; if you study the motivations of a Saturn carefully you will find that they feel inspired when they see their journey through the world as a long march down a narrow, straight path. Long, straight and narrow being the key words here – there is something in the make-up of a Saturn that relishes the prospect and the sense of security they find in mapping out a clear path. There is usually a lofty goal at the end of this path and they expect themselves to make continual personal sacrifices along the journey. These sacrifices are undertaken for the purposes of a higher cause and Saturns like to expect the same sort of sacrifices to be made by other people.
